pvc pleasures

November 30, 2008

(vintage sweater, Levi’s shorts, Forever 21 tights, Colin Stuart boots) Wow it was actually sort of cold yesterday. I’ve never really found meshy tights like these to be warm whatsoever and I’m actually pretty sure they’re irrelevant to one’s overall body temperature. Iced vanilla soy latte…maybe not. But more importantly, I’ve been hanging on to this PVC paneled sweater for a while now waiting for knits to feel more appropriate.

Plax Will Turn Himself In Tomorrow

November 30, 2008

Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who appears to be in a heap of trouble after shooting himself with an unlicensed handgun at a nightclub yesterday, will apparently turn himself into authorities and plead not guilty to charges. Word of this came from Burress’s new layer, Benjamin Brafman, the same man who represented and helped acquit Diddy (several identities ago when he was Puff Daddy) after he was charged with having an unlicensed weapon at a club in 1999. Giants owner John Mara told reporters that the league and team officials met with players before the season to discuss the complications of owning firearms. Mara said, “Players, for whatever reason, feel the need to carry guns.

Clinton Was Offered Appropriations Committee Chair

November 30, 2008

With Hillary Clinton poised join President-elect Obama’s cabinet , the Daily News reports that Clinton “passed on becoming boss of the superpowerful Senate Appropriations Committee” for the Secretary of State gig. Which might sting to NYers, because ” as chairwoman of the panel that controls the nation’s purse strings, Clinton could have pumped billions in federal dollars into the Empire State. ” The News claims Clinton really wanted to join the health care task force, but Senator Kennedy didn’t want her on board (after her presidential campaign tactics against Obama); also, she didn’t have the seniority. A source says, “I don’t think [Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid] wanted to take on that fight with Kennedy

Bushwick Goes Technicolor

Above is a new piece from him sans ballons : “a rusty welded metal cover for a window air conditioner turned into a TV set.” Again, something you’d think Michel Gondry would be putting up all over Orient Avenue . Check out AndIAmNotLying for more new pieces (as well as D.Billy’s flickr ), including a fire/police call box magically converted into a drive-thru speaker.

Get Schooled in Subway Font History

November 30, 2008

If you want The (Mostly) True Story of Helvetica and the New York City Subway , AIGA has it for you in a sprawling (and well-worth-reading) 9-page article on New York’s subway fonts. They state that while it’s commonly believed that Helvetica is the official typeface of the New York City subway system, that hasn’t always been the case (of course, since the font just celebrated its 50th anniversary, and the first underground transit system in New York City was built in the late 1800s). While “Helvetica is the official typeface of the MTA today, it was not the typeface specified by Unimark International when it created a new signage system at the end of the 1960s.” Trace the typeface of the underground, font nerds, you know you want to!

Shirley Chisholm: "I Am, Was, And Always Will Be A Catalyst For Change" [Heroines]

November 30, 2008

On this date in 1924, Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to the United States Congress, was born in Brooklyn, New York. Chisholm, who had gone to college to be a teacher, was elected to Congress in 1968, and broke another barrier by becoming the first African-American major-party candidate to run for the Presidency in 1972. While her run was ultimately unsuccessful, Chisholm earned 28 delegates and ensured that the face of American Presidential politics would be forever changed. “I am a candidate for the Presidency of the United States,” Chisholm noted, “I make that statement proudly, in the full knowledge that, as a black person and as a female person, I do not have a chance of actually gaining that office in this election year

Was Makeover Mom’s Undercover Sting Worth It?

November 30, 2008

So Doreen Giuliano transformed herself from a 46-year-old Brooklyn mother into a sexy, blond, and tanned 30-something in order to befriend a juror from her son John Giuca’s murder trial–and is now using recorded conversations with the juror to get Giuca’s conviction overturned. But will it work? The NY Times speaks to some experts about the results from Giuliano’s elaborate scheme which allegedly resulted in juror Jason Allo telling her he should never have been on the jury since he knew people on the prosecution witness list. A Legal Aid lawyer tells the Times, “Even if this had come to light somehow during the trial, even then it might not have occasioned a mistrial. Even if the whole thing were true, I think it might not result in a new trial. ” A law professor from NYU adds that there’s a “very high bar” for proof of juror prejudice
